Why this site exists
I live in Italy. Every year I watch people arrive here chasing a beautiful dream, and I watch the same thing happen to their money. They get confused by a tax system that is genuinely hard to understand, they get sold products they do not need, or they piece together advice from strangers on the internet and hope for the best. Nobody sits down and simply explains it to them, clearly and honestly. That is the gap I wanted to fill. The Italy Money Plan is the honest guide to the money side of moving to Italy that I could not find anywhere else.
Who I am
My name is Luca Petri. I am an independent, fee-only financial adviser, registered with the OCF, Italy's official register of financial advisers. I hold the CFP (Certified Financial Planner) and FMVA (Financial Modeling and Valuation Analyst) qualifications. Before I worked in finance, my background was in science and industry, including time at a large international healthcare company. That is where I learned the thing I still do every day: take something complicated, break it into its real parts, and find the answer that actually holds up.
What independent and fee-only really mean
These two words are the whole point, so let me be clear about them. Independent means I am not tied to any bank, fund, or insurance company. Fee-only means you pay me for advice, and only for advice. I do not sell financial products, and nobody pays me a commission to steer you toward anything. This matters more than it sounds. It means I have no reason to tell you anything except what is true and right for you. When I say a product is poor, or that a famous tax break will not help you, I have nothing to gain by saying it, except your trust.
How I work
I think most money advice for people moving abroad is either too salesy or too vague. So I do the opposite. I explain things in plain English, I use real numbers, and I take a clear position based on the actual rules, not on wishful thinking. My job is not to sell you the Italian dream. You already have the dream. My job is to make sure your money survives the move and supports the life you came here for.
The honest part
I will always tell you the truth, even when it is not the answer you were hoping for. The famous 7 percent Italian tax that everyone repeats online, for example, does not work in Tuscany, Florence, or Rome. You will not hear that from someone trying to sell you a relocation. You will hear it from me.
A little about the rest of my life
I do not only advise on life in Italy. I live it. My home is near Florence, where I live with my family. I know this country and its system from the inside, not from a brochure. So when I tell you what moving here is really like, financially and practically, it comes from real life, not a sales page.
